THE PROBLEM & OUR INSPIRATION
Pollution and over-consumption of the earth’s resources leading to climate change poses a fundamental threat to our planet, endangering animal species and people’s livelihoods. Our future depends on us changing the way we live and produce.
Forests are key to protecting the planet as they absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), a major source of pollution that causes climate change. The Ocean is home to more than 80% of all life on Earth and 90% of the big fish have been fished out. Acidification and warming seas are killing coral reefs which are predicted to be almost gone by 2040. Plastic waste in the ocean is a major problem with around 80% of all ocean plastic originating on land (either swept in from the coastline or carried to rivers from the streets during heavy rains). The best thing we can do to protect our seas is to prevent plastic becoming waste in the first place so it can never reach our ocean. These are some of the challenges that have helped inspire Sapien’s mission.

SAPIEN SUSTAINABILITY ACTIONS
Words are powerful but it is only through actions that real change will happen. At Sapien we strive to continuously reduce our environmental impact by finding ways to reduce our negative impact on the planet.
We look for ways to reduce our carbon footprint and use environmentally friendly materials in our products and packaging wherever we can.
Our desk tops are made of sustainably sourced, recyclable wood: 30% from recycled wood, 45% from repurposed sawmill wood and 25% industrial logwood which has been carefully sourced from FSC certified forests in Europe.
INNOVATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY
At Sapien we want to be part of the circular economy that we believe is a key part of the solution to tackling the growing global plastic waste crisis. The Research and Development Team at Sapien have been working for several years on an exciting innovation that we hope will make a difference and contribute to this circular economy.
We have developed a desktop made from recycled plastic – a world’s first for a standing desk. These innovative desktops are made otherwise wasted plastics, from yoghurt pots to industrial factory plastics.
We’ll also be using plastics taken directly out of the seas and off the beaches so we can do our bit to help clean up our precious oceans. We are aiming to help solve the UK’s plastic problem one desk at a time. Watch this space for news about this exciting project.
